More Than Music in Northern New Mexico
By January Sadler

One of my favorite things about Taos is getting to know the incredibly talented people who make the community special. Sometimes their talents are seen in the classroom, sometimes on a stage, and sometimes hanging on the wall as a beautiful work of art. Dave and Gwen Thibadeau embody all of those qualities.
As the heart of Althea’s Secret, Dave and Gwen have become familiar faces on the Northern New Mexico music scene. The duo, often joined by guest musicians, performs a variety of music that brings people together and creates the kind of welcoming atmosphere that makes local live music so important. The band was formed in 2024 and regularly performs throughout the region.
What many people may not realize is that Dave and Gwen are also educators. As teachers, they dedicate their time and energy to helping students learn and grow. That same spirit of connection and service shows up in their music. Their performances feel less like concerts and more like community gatherings, where friends and neighbors come together to share an experience.
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Althea’s Secret perform several times, and I can honestly say they are wonderful musicians. Their shows blend talent, passion, and authenticity in a way that keeps audiences engaged from beginning to end. Whether they are playing a Grateful Dead favorite, a folk classic, or another crowd-pleasing tune, it is easy to see how much they enjoy sharing music with others.

Gwen’s creativity extends far beyond music. She is also a gifted artist and painter whose work reflects the beauty, color, and spirit of Northern New Mexico. In fact, I am fortunate enough to own several pieces of her artwork, and they are among my favorite collectibles. Her paintings carry the same warmth and creativity that audiences experience during an Althea’s Secret performance.
Taos has long been known as a place where artists, musicians, and creative minds find inspiration. The landscapes, cultures, and people of this region have inspired generations of creators. Dave and Gwen continue that tradition by sharing their talents in multiple ways. Through education, music, and visual art, they contribute to the vibrant cultural tapestry that makes this community unique.
Local musicians play an important role in preserving the character of a place. They provide the soundtrack to festivals, community gatherings, celebrations, and quiet evenings with friends. Supporting local artists means supporting the people who help make our towns feel like home.

For me, Althea’s Secret represents more than a musical group. They represent the creativity, generosity, and sense of community that make Taos such a special place to live. Whether they are teaching students, performing music, or creating art, Dave and Gwen continue to enrich the lives of those around them.
If you have the opportunity to see Althea’s Secret perform, I highly recommend it. And if you ever have the chance to view Gwen’s artwork, take a moment to appreciate the talent behind it. You’ll quickly understand why they have become such valued members of the community.
Sometimes the most remarkable artists aren’t the ones performing in sold-out arenas. Sometimes they’re your neighbors, your teachers, and your friends, quietly making your community a better place one song, one student, and one painting at a time.
